Yeah...3/32 309-17 uphill does good in wind. .Look up UA46.procedure
We use root backing a lot on the job but the test is open groove & can be a real MF

Hey I found some old 308-15 & downhilled a drain pipe to a SS box. It acts kind of like Lincoln pipeliner LH D-80
Personally I wouldn't attempt downhilling any critical SS pipe welding

XXX-15 SS is an all position open groove bead rod that can be handled up or down. Always fill & cap uphill.

I've welded up & downhill quite a bit lately with a 400pro skid when the truck leads won't reach. Downhill is hot & steady all the way to flush then superb capping with 3/16

There was a 400 setting on a tree stump along 224 near Canfield.
Looks pretty nice at a glance. Don't know shit about it tho smooth but I will inquire if up that way later

I think we are missing something bp....Possibly the voltage reduction safety feature of the vantage has no effect on the arc characteristics. But I really don't know. It took me forever to figure out...

most Ohio Oilfield outfits will test Min std 6010/7018 sm dia. Sch160 and a relatively small dia
xx10 downhill. Usually No fitting test but Fall short with hand torch skills OTJ and you're done.

Pretty much a total vacuum of competent torch & air arc...

Nuisance indications in the bead is both common and hard to get rid of. Often ignored as in your case. I doubt they even know what they are seeing.
Minor trial & error technique changes will help...

Years ago DA Waldron Oilfield would make you practice & retest without pay if busting X-rays or days off as disciplinary action ..a couple or three for chronic no call no shows, a week of counseling...
